Rival RB11v (XL Bag Gloves)
“The Toyota Highlander of Boxing Gloves”
Tough and Capable
Intro
The Rival RB11V is the bag version of the RS11V. (B for Bag, and S for Sparring. See what they did there?) They are almost identical in construction and feel, so if you like one, you’ll like the other. You can check out the upcoming comparison page to see the main differences and what makes this a Bag glove and the other specific to Sparring.
The Wrist 9/10
The Wrist uses Rival’s wrist lock system, which you get a much better look at on these than the sparring version. That’s because the buckles remain uncovered on these. The wrist itself feels slightly less padded as a result, but just as secure.
Hand Comfort & Ease of Use 8/10
They’re snug and fit well. To note, they don’t come in “ounce” sizes, but rather S, M, L, and XL. These XL gloves both came in right at a svelte 13.7oz even though they fit a lot like my 16oz sparring version. The 16oz actually feel a bit more snug and padded all the way around, but they’re also known for being a very “compact” 16oz glove. Because these aren’t for sparring, the padding ca be a lot more dense and protective without having to worry about being soft enough for your partner. The Wrist lock system is just as easy as any other velcro, so good for training alone.
Punching & Protection 9/10 for bag, 1/10 for sparring
These are purpose built for the heavy bag and definitely feel that way. They deliver a satisfying pop on the bag with really good feedback. Nothing too soft or pillowy, and at the same time protective to the hand and wrist without being bulky. They are excellent at what they do. That said, they aren’t an “all around” glove for those wanting one pair to be able to do everything. (If you spar and train then you should have two pairs each with its own job, but I get that’s not everyone’s approach.)
Other Features and Intangibles 8/10
They’ve weathered a good number of rounds and with the exception of some fuzz on the wrist straps and some cosmetic tears in the embroidery, they’re still good as new. The palm is mesh and I don’t appreciate it so much for cooling my hands, but rather airing out the gloves when I’m finished. Some people don’t like mesh or synthetic fabric, but these aren’t made with your run of the mill vinyl and crappy materials. The gloves definitely feel worth their price tag.
